چکیده

Localized direct electron heating by mode-converted ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) waves in D(H) tokamak plasmas has been clearly observed for the first time in Alcator C-Mod. Both onand off-axis (high field side) mode conversion electron heating (MCEH) have been observed. The MCEH profile was obtained from a break in slope analysis of electron temperature signals in the presence of rf (radio frequency) shut-off. The temperature was measured by a 32-channel high spatial resolution (≤ 7 mm) 2 harmonic heterodyne electron cyclotron emission (ECE) system. The experimental profiles were compared with the predictions from a toroidal full-wave ICRF code TORIC. Using the hydrogen concentration measured by a high-resolution optical spectrometer, TORIC predictions were shown qualitatively in agreement with the experimental results for both onand off-axis MC cases. From the simulations, the electron heating from mode converted ion cyclotron wave (ICW) and ion Bernstein wave (IBW) is examined.

Measurements of ICRF Power Deposition and Thermal Transport with an ECE Grating

ICRF provides Alcator C-Mod with up to 3.5 MW of power at 80 MHz using two double-strap antennas. By varying the magnetic field and the mix of ion species, a variety of heating regimes have been studied. To investigate electron heating regimes, mixtures of He3 and H were used in plasmas at 6.5T. Efficient ( < 80%) direct electron heating has been observed in this scenario and is attributed to m...

Investigation of ICRF mode conversion at the ion-ion hybrid layer in Alcator C-Mod

Mode conversion (MC) of long wavelength fast electromagnetic magnetosonic waves (fast wave, or FW) into shorter wavelength electrostatic (ion-Bernstein, or IBW) or slow electromagnetic (ion cyclotron, or ICW) waves is of great interest in laboratory, magnetic fusion and space physics experiments. Such processes are particularly important in multi-ion species plasmas. In this paper we report rec...

Mode conversion current drive experiments on Alcator C-Mod

In tokamak plasmas with multiple ion species, fast magnetosonic waves (FW) in the Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequency can mode convert to shorter wavelength modes at the Ion-Ion hybrid layer, leading to localized electron heating and current drive. Due to k‖ upshifts associated with the poloidal magnetic field, only small net driven currents were predicted from mode converted Ion Bernstein Waves (...
